Patrick Méeüs

Patrick Méeüs (b. 1963), embarked on his career as a lighting designer, initially concentrating on the lighting of dance productions, a stage during which he created over 70 lighting designs for various choreographies. Since 1992, he has designed lighting for dance, as well as drama and opera productions. On the drama stage, he has worked copiously with Daniel Mesguich, creating a formidable number of lighting designs for La Comédie Française in Paris. Of his most recent projects, one should definitely mention lighting designs for Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Beijing Opera; Rigoletto at the Opéra de Lausanne; Oh, les beaux jours at the Comédie Française; La Révolte, for the stage director Jean-Marie Villegier at the Théâtre de l’Athénée; Massenet’s Werther at the Opéra de Nice; Boulevard du Boulevard du Boulevard, with Daniel Mesguich, at the Théâtre du Rond Point in Paris; and Callirhoé, by the French Baroque-era composer André Cardinal-Destouches, with the stage director René Koering, at the Opéra de Montpellier. Similarly notable were his stage lighting designs for the productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; Racine’s Cinna for D. Mesguich; Lehár’s The Land of Smiles and Rigoletto for the Marseilles Opera, and the Nantes/Angers opera house; Exodus, choreographed by Farid Berki; Die Zauberflöte for Grenoble’s Summum centre; Carmen for the Helsinki Opera; Falstaff for the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; and La vedova scaltra for the Nice Opera. Working with Arnaud Bernard, he contributed to the productions of Puccini’s Il trittico and Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, for the Angers/Nantes opera house; Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore for the St. Etienne Opera; and Verdi’s Rigoletto for the Lausanne Opera. The two artists’ latest joint projects include productions of Carmen; Falstaff; and Cavalleria rusticana.

His previous work for the Prague State Opera was the lighting design for the world premiere production of the opera by the French composer Laurent Petitgirard, Joseph Merrick dit Elephant Man, directed by Daniel Mesguich (Feb. 7, 2002).
